Karen E. Schmahl, Ph.D., P.E. is currently a Professor of Practice in the Engineering Management Program at Florida International University in Miami, FL. Dr. Schmahl shares over 20 years of Aerospace industry and consulting experience with her students, holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Cincinnati, and is also a licensed Professional Engineer.
Prior to joining Florida International University, Dr. Schmahl served as a faculty member in the Miami University in Oxford, OH. Dr. Schmahl’s primary areas of interest are Total Quality Management, Engineering Economics and Quality Engineering. Dr. Schmahl holds two patents, has had numerous publications, and has received a long list of awards including an ASEE Outstanding Teaching Award and an Ohio Society of Professional Engineers Achievement Award.
Ethling Hernandez, P.E. is currently the Assistant Vice President of Finance and Resource Management at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, FL. Ethling shares over 15 years of industry experience leading countless strategic, operational and financial decisions with a focus on Process Improvement and Cost Efficiencies. Ethling holds a MS in Engineering Management from the University of Central Florida and is also a licensed Professional Engineer and a certified Six Sigma Black Belt.
Prior to joining Mount Sinai Medical Center, Ethling worked in multiple ISE roles at Holy Cross Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Beckman Coulter, Boston Scientific and Kraft Foods. Ethling is also an avid cross- fitter and a mother of three children who loves to take any opportunity to teach and share her knowledge.
Eddie Alvarez is a FinTech leader, currently focused on bringing to market a new financial servicesproduct targeting the underbanked community. He brings over 25 years of experience in financial services, gaining expertise in Product Management, Agile Product Development, Operations Management, Business Process Engineering/Lean, and Decision Sciences. Eddie holds an MS in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from the University of Miami and a certificate in Leadership Excellence from Harvard University.
Prior to recently starting his own business, Eddie worked for American Express where he was COO and Head of Product Development for Merchant Financing, and held other roles in Marketing Analytics, Information Management, and Servicing Operations. With any free time, Eddie engages in extreme home-improvement, photography, and practicing guitar, where he aspires to mediocrity!
Alitza Vega is currently a Program Manager Newbuild Associate at Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd. in Miami, FL. Alitza shares over 25 years of experience in Operations, Project Management, Operational Risk, Control and Compliance, and Customer Service functions. Alitza holds a BS in Industrial and Chemical Engineering from Universidad Centroamericana in Managua, Honduras.
Prior to joining Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., Alitza worked in multiple ISE roles for RSA, American Express, and Watson Pharma Ptv Ltd. As a process oriented, highly organized and very analytical person, Alitza was instrumental in the delivery of Spectrum of the Seas (a Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. cruise ship) and is currently managing the completion of Odyssey of the Seas, scheduled for delivery in October 2020 in Germany.
