Empire Startups headed to San Francisco to host our fourth annual Empire FinTech Conference. Early morning on November 13, the Regency Ballroom (an awesome and somewhat different venue for a conference) started filling-up with attendees.
The morning started with two amazing women in a FinTech Fireside. Adrienne Harris highlighted some learnings from her time serving as Special Assistant for President Obama speaking about ‘FinTech Adulting: An Industry in Adolescence’ with Elizabeth Kelly (also former Special Assistant in the White House!)
The first panel of the day to make their way onto the stage was the ‘Real Housewives of RegTech’ featuring startups like Continuity and Hummingbird and experts in the legal practice to provide a 360-degree view on the subject.
Next was the first set of demos showcasing WeTrust, presented by co-founder and CEO, George Li. Followed by crowdfunding platform Republic, presented by Caroline Hofmann, co-founder and COO. And wrapping up the session we had a phenomenal live demo by Jason Brown, from Tally who gave us a peek into their automated personal finance technology.
One of the highlights of the day was the fireside chat with Ken Lin, founder of Credit Karma, as he spoke to Gené Teare from Crunchbase on the “Rise of the Machines: Autonomous Finance will be here before you know it”.
We couldn’t put a FinTech conference together without talking about the Challenger Bank Revolution the panel was led by Tanaya Macheel from Cheddar, with reps from the UK FinTech challengers Monzo and PockIt and the larger incumbents.
The afternoon set of demos was entirely presented by women founders. Showcasing the Real Estate Tech solution Divvy was co-founder Adena Hefets. On the AI front for DefinedCrowd was founder and CEO, Daniela Braga. Concluding the session OpenDoor Securities demoed by Lauren Gardner.
After lunch, we took a dive into APIs and fraud in a fireside with CEO and founder of Galileo Processing, Clay Wilkes. Followed by a panel on the VC perspectives for FinTech in Silicon Valley, guided by Christine Loredo from Yodlee and with speakers from NEA, Centana Growth Partners, Lightspeed and Aligned Partners.
And last but not least, one of our all-time favorite topics: the ‘Financial Inclusion – Mind the Gap’ panel. With a strong startup presence: Kabbage, PayJoy, Cover and the investment perspective from Venrock.
To wrap a FinTech filled day we had the energy and vision of an all-time entrepreneur: David Barret, founder of Expensify who shared in a fireside with Sarah Biller from FinTech Sandbox the meaning of success in FinTech and the story behind Expensify. Looking to the future he discussed at length how Payments Can Power a More Inclusive Global Financial System.
